Stand 9
The majority of the east half of this field was open in the 1930 photo, with some open-grown larger trees on the west half. Portions of this stand were impacted by the 2006 spring tornado. This area includes bottom and upland areas. The bottomland is open in places and covered with reed canary grass, and has scattered boxelder, cottonwood, honeylocust, and willow in other areas. These trees are sapling to small sawtimber-sized trees. Some of the upland trees include a mixture of oak, basswood, and black cherry. The understory in some of these locations has some native shrubs such as dogwood, and non-native undesirable shrubs such as exotic honeysuckle and multi-flora rose. Another significant non-native plant found on the forest floor of this stand is garlic mustard (Alliaria petiolata). Stand 10 This area had some large looking trees in the 1930 photo that were open grown. The overstory (upper layer) of the forest cover in this stand consists of scattered large-sized white and bur oak. In the mid-story there are scattered to moderately-dense groups of pole-sized basswood, black cherry, and black walnut. The understory (lower layer) consists of scattered seedling-sized hackberry, black cherry, and basswood. The understory has some native shrubs such as gooseberry, and non-native undesirable shrubs such as exotic honeysuckle. Another significant non-native plant found on the forest floor of this stand is garlic mustard (Alliaria petiolata). Stand 11 This area had some trees in it in the 1930 photos, but it appears trees were just starting to become established at that time. The overstory (upper layer) of the forest cover in this stand consists of scattered to moderately dense groups of pole to small sawtimber-sized shagbark hickory, and a few black cherry, hackberry, and bitternut hickory. The understory (lower layer) consists of scattered seedling-sized hackberry. The understory also has some native shrubs such as gooseberry, and non-native undesirable shrubs such as exotic honeysuckle, multi-flora rose, and privet. ![]() Stand 12 This area had some significant tree vegetation in it in the 1930 photos. The overstory (upper layer) of the forest cover in this stand consists of scattered pole to small sawtimber-sized shagbark and bitternut hickory. The understory (lower layer) consists of scattered sapling-sized black cherry, shagbark hickory, and white ash. The understory also has some native shrubs such as gooseberry, and non-native undesirable shrubs such as exotic honeysuckle, multi-flora rose, privet and European cranberrybush viburnum. Thicket 2 This area was mostly treeless in the 1930 photo. This area is generally a thicket of shrubs such as dogwood and non-native honeysuckle. There are spots of oak, honeylocust, shagbark hickory, and black cherry. |
