At our request, Chris Bair of the Iowa Valley Resource and Conservation District of the Iowa DNR prepared a landscape history of Hickory Hill Park. The purpose of this "landscape history" is to help the Iowa City community to better understand the cultural and natural history of this property.
Every acre of Iowa has a unique history. Understanding the history specific to a cherished piece of land will create a greater appreciation for that land and strengthen our bond with it. A number of resources exist that can help tell this story and this report includes and interprets a number of these resources.
Hickory Hill Park contains approximately 185 acres in northeastern Iowa City, much of it is still in a fairly "natural" state. The current property consists of an amalgamation of previously separate properties many of which have an interesting story to tell. A good place to begin is with the treaty which transferred ownership from the Sac and Fox to the U.S. Government.
